Hrvatski Telekom retires its 3G network
Hrvatski Telekom has successfully completed the project of retiring its 3G network, which has now been fully shut down across the entire territory of the Republic of Croatia.
The 3G network shutdown project took two years and was carried out in several phases. After thorough preparatory activities, the 3G network was first shut down in March 2024 in the Osijek area and its surroundings, followed by Zagreb in July 2024, and then in Dubrovnik, Makarska, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Šibenik, and Zadar during November last year. In the remaining areas of Croatia, the network was shut down on January 30, 2025, marking the end of the HT 3G network.
"We have officially retired 3G technology, which is another milestone in the evolution of Hrvatski Telekom. This significant step marks the end of one era and the transition to faster networks powered by 4G and 5G. This challenging project means better connectivity, improved user experiences, and energy-efficient solutions, which align with our commitment to innovation and sustainability. Shutting down the 3G network was an extensive and demanding project. I thank the entire team for their efforts and dedication, which made this success possible," said Boris Drilo, Member of the Management Board and Chief Technical and Chief Information Officer (CTIO) at Hrvatski Telekom.
By freeing up frequency resources and capacity, HT further enhances 4G and 5G technologies, giving users access to the most advanced telecommunications services and a premium user experience. Focusing on faster and more advanced mobile technologies and services creates new opportunities for continued innovation and improved connectivity, positively impacting social and economic development. Upon completing this process, our network reduces the carbon footprint per transmitted data volume, as 4G technology is five times and 5G technology is 15 times more energy efficient than 3G.
Hrvatski Telekom regularly and promptly informed its customers throughout the entire process about the implementation and timeline of the 3G network shutdown. Customers can still find detailed information about the 3G network's retirement and answers to frequently asked questions on the 3G Network Shutdown page.
