MELODY OF EUROPE: A Unique Composition Born from Billions of Calls and Messages
- A symphony of 109 billion data points
- Zagreb Cathedral featured in an audiovisual project among ten European landmarks
- Artificial intelligence in the service of creativity and connectivity
Using AI tools, Deutsche Telekom, in collaboration with Hrvatski Telekom, operators from nine other European countries, and international experts, has created a unique composition titled Melody of Europe.
By combining science and art through artificial intelligence, the activity of users on the 5G network was transformed into a musical piece symbolizing Europe’s digital connectivity.
Hrvatski Telekom, Deutsche Telekom (DT), and other DT group operators from Austria, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, and Slovakia monitored mobile network usage data for one month across ten European capitals. This data included internet access, phone calls, and SMSs. The aggregated and anonymized data, encompassing 109 billion network activities, was processed through a special algorithm and converted into a musical score. Higher tones represent more intense network activity, while lower tones reflect less activity. Based on this score, AI music composition software, drawing on classical music knowledge, composed a universal language of music from the dynamics of European mobile networks.
Melody of Europe has also been transformed into an audiovisual experience by pairing the music with 3D models of iconic landmarks from the ten European countries involved. Among these is Zagreb Cathedral, which is featured in an artistic animation illustrating the diverse yet interconnected pulse of Europe’s capitals. The project was developed with contributions from internationally renowned data scientist and researcher Milan Janosov, PhD, and media artist and composer Hayk Zakoyan, who created the generative artistic animation.
“With this project, we demonstrate how technology and creativity can come together to create a powerful symbol of unity. Melody of Europe reflects our commitment to connecting people and communities across Europe,” said Dominique Leroy, Member of the Management Board for Europe at Deutsche Telekom.
“At Hrvatski Telekom, we are dedicated to investing in state-of-the-art network infrastructure to connect people with today’s opportunities and tomorrow’s innovations. As Croatia’s leading telecommunications provider, we cover over two million residents with the most advanced 5G network, the winner of numerous awards. Like our networks, music is an invisible yet powerful thread that connects us. The Melody of Europe project merges human creativity with artificial intelligence into a truly unique composition,” said Nataša Rapaić, CEO of Hrvatski Telekom.
