Hrvatski Telekom equips new container port in Rijeka with 5G network
Hrvatski Telekom has equipped the new container terminal in Rijeka with a 5G network, a significant step forward in the evolution of 5G technology in the maritime industry. HT provides a comprehensive Managed Service for 5G communication on a turnkey basis.
HT was selected by Rijeka Gateway, a port operating company founded by A.P. Moller-Maersk and the ENNA Group, to develop and manage the terminal in Rijeka, which will start operations in 2025. APMT, as part of the Maersk Group, which oversees wireless connectivity in more than 70 ports worldwide, will test this new operating model (Managed Service by Hrvatski Telekom) in Rijeka and additionally migrate from the current 5G NSA architecture to the advanced 5G SA architecture, thus becoming the first user of a dedicated Network Slice for industrial applications.
"This project demonstrates Rijeka Gateway's confidence in our ability to provide a high availability service for flawless 24/7 port operations. It confirms our strategy in providing business-critical communication through our public mobile network," emphasized Marijana Bačić, a Management Board member and Chief Operating Officer Business at Hrvatski Telekom.
"In Rijeka, we are developing one of the most technologically advanced terminals. From the beginning of designing the terminal, we defined the goal of minimizing the terminal's impact on the environment and the local community. The terminal in Rijeka will be the only terminal in this part of Europe with remotely operated cranes. Almost all equipment will be electric, and we are installing very advanced energy optimization and overall terminal management systems. A high-quality and reliable communication infrastructure is a prerequisite for this way of working, and we look forward to cooperating with Hrvatski Telekom," said Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway.
Rijeka Gateway is one of the most comprehensive infrastructure projects since the founding of the Republic of Croatia, initiating a comprehensive revitalization of a part of Rijeka's coastal area. Rijeka Gateway will be the state-of-the-art, remotely operated container terminal in this part of Europe. With a concession for the next 50 years, it will serve as the main entry point for container traffic to the countries and markets of the European hinterland. It will play a vital role in developing the local economy, considering domestic companies will execute most project contracts. The total investment value is 380 million euros, and the project has been declared a project of strategic importance for the Republic of Croatia.
