Hrvatski Telekom and Nokia first in Croatia to test 25Gb/second PON fiber broadband reaching unprecedented 20Gb speeds

Hrvatski Telekom and Nokia first in Croatia to test 25Gb/second PON fiber broadband reaching unprecedented 20Gb speeds

Hrvatski Telekom and Nokia were among the first in the world to test advanced 25G PON fiber technology in HT's Rijeka lab today. It is the latest generation of fiber network, which increases the speed of download and upload to unprecedented levels. Rijeka laboratory measured the speed of 20 gigabits per second.

25G PON technology is ten times faster than GPON technology, first enabling gigabit broadband access in 2007. It is also two and a half times faster than XGS-PON technology applied from 2021. The equipment currently used by Hrvatski Telekom is 25G PON ready. This means that it is unnecessary to adjust the main systems to realize its commercial availability.

The biggest advantages of 25G PON fiber are large capacity, cost optimization, straightforward use, and easy installation. It application will accelerate the introduction and development of advanced high performance solutions such as big data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, 5G transport and wholesale.

By being among the first in the world to test 25G PON fiber, Hrvatski Telekom shows its commitment to establishing and maintaining the best customer experience, following trends and introducing cutting-edge global technology trends," said Ivan Uremović, Director of Access Network Strategy and Planning Department of Hrvatski Telekom.

Hrvatski Telekom is one of the first companies from the Deutsche Telekom Group to test Nokia's broadband 25G PON fiber.

Manfred Egger, Head of Business Development Deutsche Telekom and Central Europe at Nokia, said “25G PON can work seamlessly together on the same fiber hardware as existing GPON and XGS-PON broadband technologies We’re very proud to have completed this important trial which demonstrates the ease with which Communications Service Providers can add scale and capacity.”

In 2021, Hrvatski Telekom increased its fixed network with a record introduction of fiber for a further 100,000 households and companies. The total FTTH coverage increased by 30 percent compared to the year before. The same year, HT was also awarded Umlaut's "Best in Test" award for the best fixed network.

Increasing the fixed network and investing in gigabit networks continues in 2022 with a strong focus on building fiber infrastructure.
