Hrvatski Telekom confirms the status of the fastest mobile network and the network with the best mobile coverage in Croatia
- Ookla Speedtest® Awards™ represent real world mobile network performance. Users of all mobile networks in Croatia carried out tests.
- The Fastest Mobile Network and Best Mobile Coverage awards are the result of Hrvatski Telekom's continuous investments in mobile network quality
- The development of the network is intensified through further investments in 5G technology and fiber optic infrastructure
Hrvatski Telekom received two Ookla awards for the second consecutive year - for the fastest mobile network in Croatia and for the best mobile coverage.
The awards were presented by Ookla, the world leader in internet quality access testing and analysis. With more than 10 million tests per day and nearly 30 billion speed tests via the Speedtest platform by telecom users worldwide, Ookla has the largest global database of fixed and mobile network performance worldwide. Testing on the Ookla Speedtest platform is free and users test the network through which they access the internet in a real environment and on their own devices, which gives the best insight into their real user experience.
Ookla compared results of more than 186,000 user tests conducted on Speedtest iOS and Android mobile applications with all major mobile operators in Croatia during the first and second quarters of 2020 to determine which provides the highest mobile network speeds. The results from over 130 million scans taken on Android devices were analyzed to identify the operator with the best mobile network coverage.
Hrvatski Telekom achieved significantly better results in mobile download and upload speeds than other mobile operators in Croatia, achieving a Speed Score™ of 70.71 Mbit/s with an average speed of 86.05 Mbit/s for download and 17.43 Mbit/s for data loading.
Coverage scans observed at 243,273 locations in Croatia on the networks of all mobile operators showed that Hrvatski Telekom's network had the best Coverage Score™ of 816 points with mobile network available to users at 99.90 percent of locations observed. The 4G network is available to users at 91.40 percent of locations observed.
Speed Score™ involves measuring the download and upload speed of each service provider to rank the network speed while Coverage Score™ includes measuring the availability and footprint of each service provider within the country.
"The continuity of investing in the quality of Hrvatski Telekom's mobile network is best seen in the recognition that comes from the users themselves. Ookla certificates reflect a personal user experience, which is why they are the most globally valued and referenced indicators of mobile network quality. We are immensely proud to have received these awards during the Covid-19 pandemic that brought a drastic increase in telecommunications traffic. Hrvatski Telekom, as the largest private investor in the digitalization of Croatia, will continue to invest in gigabit future of Croatia including the implementation of fiber optics to households and 5G network. This year alone, we will achieve record numbers in covering 80,000 Croatian households with optics, which represents a 60 percent increase compared to last year. Despite the corona situation, we remain on the realization path of our initial investment plan. These investments are crucial for Croatia's economic recovery and rapid transition to a digital society”, stated Boris Drilo, Member of the Management Board and Chief Telecommunications and Chief Information Technology Director of Hrvatski Telekom.
With the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment in Croatia at the end of 2019, the modernization of Hrvatski Telekom's mobile network has been completed and it is now ready for 5G technology and advanced services of the future. The modernization of the network has created the preconditions for accelerated introduction of 5G technology in the whole of Croatia, which will be the basis of economic growth. Hrvatski Telekom implemented the first 5G test base station in Croatia in March 2019, and to date 20 pilot base stations have been implemented (Samobor, Zagreb, Krk, Osijek). Intensive work is being done to test the functionality and performance of 5G technology and prepare for commercial operations once the required radio frequency spectrum is allocated. Hrvatski Telekom is the leader in the segment of 5G technology development, as evidenced by 10 unique 5G projects over the past more than a year - video. This year, Hrvatski Telekom was the first in Croatia to introduce a revolutionary dynamic shared spectrum (DSS) technology that enables the use of existing 4G frequencies for 5G technology, which is a key lever for 5G development in Croatia, as well as for networking and automation of a high number of devices such as sensors, robotic machines, autonomous vehicles.
With 5G, Hrvatski Telekom continues to intensively build fiber optic infrastructure and bring it to households. In the first half of the year, 20,000 households and businesses were covered with fiber optic infrastructure, including 80 percent of Rab which became the first gigabit island in Croatia. The preparation and implementation of fiber optic infrastructure for an additional 60,000 households and businesses by the end of the year is ongoing.
