Dubravka Ugrešić, winner of tportal’s eleventh literary award for the best novel
The author Dubravka Ugrešić won the tportal’s eleventh literary award for the best novel. A HRK 50,000 award and a keyboard statue were handed to her for the novel Fox published by Fraktura on Friday night at the ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb.
"Recognition by the profession is extremely important to every writer. Especially when it is an award such as this from tportal. It already has the reputation and has managed to exist for eleven years and now it includes a significant corpus of valuable Croatian novels. In a time when people read less and less, each award is very valuable”, Dubravka Ugrešić said after receiving the prize awarded by the jury for a novel which, as the jury explained in the statement, is “ironic, harsh, and gentle, "full of references inducing to new literary searches' and “refining its readers”.
"With performance and poetics, the Fox is a completely contemporary novel that restores some of the"old” values: above all, the belief in the power of art and the power of "heretics and dreamers” who, although on the margins of society, are creating that art", said the jury of: Ivica Buljan, president, Ursula Burger, Katarina Luketić, Jadranka Pintarić and Miroslav Mićanović.
Tportal's literary award for the best Croatian novel has been awarded since 2008. This is the only domestic literary award for a novel written in Croatian published by a publisher registered in Croatia. Along with the promotion of authors and literary creativity, it is aimed at promotion of publishing. A record of 64 titles applied for this year's eleventh contest Last year, the best novel was “The Gypsy, but the most beautiful” by Kristian Novak in the edition by OceanMore publishing house.
In the finals of this year's literary award, along with Dubravka Ugrešić, were Ivica Prtenjača with the novel “Silent demolition” (VBZ), Zoran Roško with the novel “Minus sapiens” (OceanMore), Jurica Pavičić with the novel “Red water” (profil) and Korana Serdarević with the novel 'Experiment of Irena Tot” (Fraktura).
The literary award ceremony was also an excellent opportunity to mark the 15th anniversary of tportal, which brought together numerous guests from the cultural and political life of Croatia.
