On the occasion of marking the International Safer Internet Day, Hrvatski Telekom is launching a large-scale national user education and training initiative about methods of protection on digital platforms within its corporate social responsibility initiative intended to improve the safety of children on the Internet, entitled "Share the Positive, Block the Negative". Furthermore, tomorrow Hrvatski Telekom will be signing the Safer Internet Charter. The initiative was launched by the Safer Internet Centre and the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM). It shows the preparedness of mobile operators for a proactive approach to increasing the Internet safety of children.
Starting from tomorrow, HT staff will be distributing a new brochure entitled "How to Protect a Child in the World of Internet, Network Technologies and Mobile Phones" in T-Centres throughout Croatia. The brochure was prepared by the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM). In addition to the brochure, all those interested will be provided a large number of additional practical online safety tips.
"Most Internet users lack sufficient knowledge about Internet safety, and we at HAKOM have the impression that children are frequently more informed about this issue than their parents. Hence, the specific objective of this brochure is not only to provide information for children, but also for their parents and, more importantly, to encourage dialogue between parents and children about this important topic", was the explanation of the brochure content provided by Ivo Majerski, Information and Consumer Protection Department Manager at HAKOM.
The publishing of the brochure by HAKOM was driven by the results of the first national comparative research study conducted by the end of last year about Internet safety of children under the international project EU Kids Online. The research that successfully brought together the academic community, the non-governmental sector, and state institutions, whilst striving to provide a professional background for the inclusion and integration of the issue of Internet safety of children and youth into the educational curriculum, was supported by HT through its large-scale initiative "Share the Positive, Block the Negative".
"Hrvatski Telekom, as the leading telecom operator and the digital transformation front-runner in Croatia, feels it is its responsibility, within its capacity, to ensure the safest possible online environment in which the public and especially young people use new technologies. We believe this is an extremely important topic, which we will continue encouraging through our initiative "Share the Positive, Block the Negative". The fact that the awareness level concerning the risks is currently insufficient has been shown by the finding that one third of young people become involved in online communication with total strangers. Moreover, every fourth teenager aged between 15 and 17 years old has actually met in real life with a person they had first met online. Consequently, this year we are going to additionally focus on user education and continue with the implementation of products and services intended to increase the safety on digital platforms", pointed out Nataša Rapaić, Member of the Management Board of HT and Chief Operating Officer Residential.
