On 17 and 18 May, the Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) hosted the Job Fair 2017, a career fair organised by FER’s Career Centre, by members of the faculty’s student club “KSET” and by members of the FER Student Association. This year, the interest of students, but also of employers, reached a new record high – hundreds of students were on the lookout for their opportunity, and the fair attendance by Hrvatski Telekom drew particular strong attention.
HT’s exhibition stand attracted numerous students, as this was the place where they could see HT’s software innovations and a 3D printer, but also the friendly robot Roberta with whom they could have a conversation.

“I am pleased that we can welcome Roberta as a teaser and announcement of technology events that we are going to present to students in the future and that will help us at Human Resources to get digitised. This is the direction towards the entire company is heading, including Human Resources” said Marija Felkel, Member of the Management Board of Hrvatski Telekom in charge of Human Resources, for tportal.
At the fair, Roberta serves as a tool for recruitment of new staff, it talks to the students and collects resumes, although it was made for many other purposes as well.
Interactive robot Roberta drew the most attention
“Roberta will help us to approach the new generation that is having a hard time to prepare a resume with pencil and paper and mail it to the employer. We recognise new trends, we keep track of what is going on and we want to show young people that we are much more than just a telecom company. We have interesting projects which are part of our cooperation with international companies. All young people who come to work in our company will have the opportunity to use cutting-edge technology in international teams” Felkel said.
She added that fairs like this one at FER pose an excellent opportunity for employers to come into direct contact with potential employees.
„Although I am an advocate for all modern technologies, I think that people like the personal hands-on experience, they like to get a first feeling and first impression of what kind of company we are. Of course, they also like to ask questions. We like to answer the first questions directly, to exchange contacts and provide the young people with an opportunity to visit our company and to be employed at our company”, she concluded.
Machine learning competition
Robert Manenica from the e-Company of Hrvatski Telekom which is dealing with internal and external digitalisation, organised a machine learning competition for students of technical faculties, i.e. of STEM. “We took data from our sales channels, anonymised them, left the sales events and supplied them with about half a million records for analysis. The idea was to create a predictive model that will decide in real time what the next best step is. We found it very interesting to see how these young people function”, he said. The winning team from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has already left for an international competition in Switzerland.
Shor information about the Job Fair
The largest job fair in Croatia has doubled in size compared to last year: this year, it saw the participation of 93 companies from Croatia and abroad which the students can get acquainted with directly. The companies present themselves to the students through 38 half-hour lectures and by stands where the students can find company employees who are working in the areas of their interest and obtain first-hand information on employment options, practice and internships.
The Job Fair is an open-type fair, available to all students, and those who cannot be there in person are given the option to join the fair via streaming.
