In collaboration with its partner EcoMobile, Hrvatski Telekom kicked-off a pilot-project for a smart electronic record system of municipal waste collection in Velika Gorica that will optimise business operations of the Municipal Centre VG Goričanka and bring savings for the citizens.
“On this project, we have confirmed that Hrvatski Telekom is not only the technology leader, but also the bearer of social changes. We have used the project to realise the vision of a smart city and to transform it into reality. By means of the smart city solution ecosystem, we provide the possibility to boost efficiency in city management, along with increased participation of citizens, the business community, and municipal services. All solutions are placing the citizen in the centre, enabling them to enjoy the benefits of digitalisation and automation of interconnected systems”, said Saša Pavlaković from Hrvatski Telekom at the presentation.
The system includes an electronic record system for waste collection, Smart Waste sensors tracking the containers’ fill level, and the “Moj Otpad” (My Waste) information and geolocation system that will be made available to the citizens via mobile application. The solution will bring savings and optimise operations, as it enables billing of the waste collection and disposal service based on the number of times the waste is collected or based on the weight of the waste collected, which means that households will be charged according to their actual habits. Waste collection information is transferred to the application in real time, and data can be accessed from any location, anytime. The system is fully automated and does not require any additional effort on the side of the public utility workers.
“This type of sensor is an innovation, and Velika Gorica is keeping track of international trends. Information on the containers’ fill level can be monitored via application, and the benefit is the price difference, as the garbage trucks will go out into the field only when container emptying is really necessary. After some time, the system will foresee on which day the containers need emptying. A novelty for the citizens will be the application for which there is a keen interest. The application will provide interaction with the citizens and make it easy to find a location for waste disposal according to the current location and, in addition, this will be a two-way communication, so that the citizens will be able to communicate with the city”, said Borna Belak from EcoMobile company.
In collaboration with its partner EcoMobile, Hrvatski Telekom has already implemented a smart electronic record system of municipal waste collection in Koprivnica, which is showing excellent results. The number of garbage truck tours has been optimised, and the public utility company “GKP Komunalac” can better manage the employees’ time in real time, which results in reduced operational costs. The quality of the solution is also attested to by the fact that Koprivnica is the first city in the region boasting the ISO Certificate 37120: Sustainable development – indicators of city services and quality of life, and during the certification process, Hrvatski Telekom and its partner SmartIS company provided consulting services to the City of Koprivnica.
