Hrvatski Telekom, the forerunner of digitalisation and digital transformation in Croatia, is the first company within the Deutsche Telekom Group with a GSMA standardised solution for customers and one of the first companies in Europe to offer a commercial solution that is technically prepared to offer the new and extremely advanced eSIM service.
eSIM is an evolution in SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) technology used by telecommunications operators to provide their services to customers. It will replace the use of physical SIM cards in mobile devices and enable independent connectivity to devices that lacked such functionality so far by integrating a chip that will support the eSIM service. In new generations of mobile devices, the physical SIM card will be replaced by a chipset that will support the eSIM service and enable adjustment of settings for lines of individual customers by taking over the eSIM profile to the customer's devices.
eSIM is the new standard confirmed by the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communication Association) only by the end of the last year. This standard marks important progress in the technology of provision of telecommunications services and is closely linked to the development of services in the Internet of Things (IoT) domain, services for various wearable devices (smartwatches, smart wristbands, etc.), and smart vehicles, which will be the focus of Hrvatski Telekom in the near future. In the next two years, the number of devices per user is expected to increase and exceed four devices, and eSIM technology will make it easier for the user to connect to several devices.
“We are extremely proud that we at Hrvatski Telekom, of all companies within the Deutsche Telekom Group, were the first ones to develop a service that will very soon become a global standard in the smart device offering. This is a huge acknowledgement of the expertise of Hrvatski Telekom employees, who have developed the service within an international team of experts, in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom. In the upcoming period, the offering of Hrvatski Telekom will include a growing number of devices supporting this service”, said Nataša Rapaić, Member of the Management Board of Hrvatski Telekom in charge of residential customers.
All technical prerequisites are in place already today, and the e-Sim service will be unveiled to customers during April at the T-Centre Sky in Zagreb, while sales of the first smartwatch to use eSIM (Huawei Watch 2) are expected to start in the course of May.
