On Wednesday, 27 May, the central day of the 38th international MIPRO 2015 convention, gathering more than 1 200 participants from 42 countries, the convention was ceremoniously opened. As in many previous years, Hrvatski Telekom is the golden sponsor of this convention, in which, apart from Boris Batelić, Member of the Management Board of HT in charge of customer experience, a number of experts of Hrvatski Telekom have taken part and presented interesting topics.
During the introductory lecture, Vedran Mornar, Prof., Dr.Sc., Minister of Science, Education and Sport, emphasised that the economy was finally coming out of crisis, that things were getting better, in which ICT technology had its role, adding that Croatia cannot be saved by cheap labour force, but brains. In the continuation of the convention, there was a panel discussion on the strategy of smart specialisation, which, according to Minister Mornar, was the umbrella document of the innovation policy, which we needed to adopt if we wanted to efficiently draw finances from the EU Funds.
Technologies and Economy Must Respond to the Challenges of the New Age
Panellists participating in the roundtable were: Boris Batelić, Member of the Management Board of HT, Darinko Bago, Petar Biljanović, Rozelindra Čož-Rakovac, Mladen Mauher, Ivan Vidaković, and Slavko Vidović. They discussed social goals and a strategy available to each citizen in the street, not only to experts.
A parallel was drawn between biotechnologies and ICT, because on the one hand we have GMO, including different genetic manipulations, and, on the other hand, we have an indication of artificial intelligence. In both cases we are talking about “playing God”. Therefore, it is important to what extent science is used and how transparent it is, so that each individual can make his/her informed choice. The needs of humankind are growing, while technologies and economy have to respond to all challenges arising from a constantly increasing number of population on the Earth. The European Union has opted for smart specialisation in order to efficiently spend funds during its development, following at the same time the development of the USA and China. The objective is to recognise and further develop the advantages of each of the European regions, instead of investing into what will be most developed in the future.
Croatia must have a smart specialisation project, an industry and tourism development project, and an innovation project. Almost all of these projects are still not completed, but in order to draw funds for them from the EU, it is essential to have excellence centres, which our country lacks. After the industrial and technological revolution, we have a revolution of the key information and communication technology through nanotechnology and the area of new materials, where no one in Europe can predict which devices will be current in 2020. The focus is on strengths, entrepreneurship, and education, which must be more flexible in order to respond to the challenges which are about to arise in a few years. Nowadays, more and more businesses are founded on informatics instead on brick or needle production. The big data concept has become more important than we thought it would have, it is necessary to process huge amounts of data, which are subsequently useful in everyday life, while children in the first class already must have a tablet in order to know more than their teachers.
Boris Batelić handed over valuable gifts to the most successful students of the specialised MIPRO competition.
Apart from the above mentioned roundtable, Ružica Gajić, representative of Hrvatski Telekom, attended the roundtable on the following topic: Service of Building Management System Improvement in Cloud Computing for Its Economically Optimal Operation – Results of the ENHEMS-Buildings Project. She was one of the introductory lecturers.
